SMA9 Closing words from the Chairman Shuichi “Mocchi” Mochida:
Shuichi “Mocchi” Mochida,
Coamix Inc. Board of Directors
Chairman, The SILENT MANGA AUDITION Committee.
Chief Editor, SMAC! The WEB/MANGA Magazine.
“As always, thank you all so much for the large number of entries for SILENT MANGA AUDITION®, and a warm congratulations to all the SMA9 prize winners! Thanks also to the creators who worked hard on producing their wonderful entries, yet were unfortunate in being seletced this time. On behalf of the all judges, and staff, I wish to extend our heartfelt gratitude to you all.
Thanks to you, we’ve received 505 submissions for SMA9 from 59 countries around the world. From SMA8 we started accepting submissions from Japan and, though we received 30 entries domestically, it was surprising to see them struggle to compete against the high level of quality demonstrated in the entries from places around the world such as Brazil and Indonesia. I really feel this just goes to show the growing standard of quality across the board.
With the forthcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics / Paralympics firmly in mind, we chose the three sports orientated themes of “Fairness”, Teamwork”, and “Respect”, the essence of which were beautifully incorporated into many of the excellent entries we received.
More than just a high level of artwork, submissions are also judged on their capacity to entertain the reader, their direction, and their story structure. As such, those of you considering entering next time, will no doubt benefit from using this round’s submissions as a point of reference when creating a manga that can compete in all areas – not just artwork level. Please, give it your best shot!
Once again, thank you all very much, and we very much look forward to seeing your future submissions.”

Tsukasa Hojo:
“Simply put, it’s a lot of fun. The comedic sense in this manga is much akin to Fujio Akatsuka I feel. It’s nice to see such an unusual entry for SMA and I would certainly like to see more creations of this nature.”
Nobuhiko Horie:
“This entry does a great job in conveying the theme but, what really impressed me about this work, was the startling composition the creator used. I was also really surprised by the stark difference in literary styles that RIZA aL ASSAM used between this and their other entry “THE LAST OF US.””
Tetsuo Hara:
“It’s really hard to imagine the creator being just 14 years old when looking at his excellent sketching and composition skills. The story itself is simple and commonplace, but the creator’s simple artwork matches the manga perfectly.”
Tsukasa Hojo on SMA9:
“This time round, I felt that many of the entries presented the fresh kind of approach you’d expect to see from a new creator. Having strong illustration skills is great but, what we’re really looking for, are young people with a talent for engaging the readers and make them enjoy reading manga. With that point in mind, I was very happy to see there were many creators this time who, though still in process of learning their art, were able to display great potential. ”
Tsukasa Hojo: / Coamix Inc. Board of Directors / Creator: Angel Heart / Angel Heart 2nd Season ( Coamix ) / Creator: CITYHUNTER ( Shueisha ) / Creator: CAT’S EYE ( Shueisha )
Tetsuo Hara on SMA9:
“I’m constantly impressed by how much the overall quality of the submissions is improving with each passing contest. If I was to give one piece of advice however, it would be to not overly rely on large panel use. When presenting an important scene, drawing the panels in a large size isn’t the only way the make the panel feel big. Learning how to convey scenes by using an effective balance of larger and smaller frames will prove useful, and should also give the work a real boost in terms of quality.”
Tetsuo Hara: Coamix Inc. Board of Directors / Co-Creator: Ikusa no Ko: Oda Nobunaga ( Coamix ) / Co-Creator: Fist of the Blue Sky ( Coamix ) / Co-Creator: Fist of the North Star ( Shueisha )
Ryuji Tsugihara on SMA9:
“In comparison to Japan’s own newcomer award entries, I find it deeply interesting how the SMA creators have infused their unique individuality into their works. I also really admire the level of art on display this time round. As for the storylines, I feel there is still room for improvement so I’m very much looking forward to seeing what they come up with when tackling the next theme.”
Ryuji Tsugihara: / Coamix Inc. Board of Directors / Creator: Commander-in-Chief Sakuraba Kouichirou ( Coamix ) / Creator: Restore Garage 251: Kurumaya Yumejirou ( Coamix ) / Creator: Yoroshiku Mecha-doc ( Shueisha )
Nobuhiko Horie on SMA9:
“Even if the artwork isn’t exceptional, there were many entries where I could really feel the passion that went into the creators manga. I think they have done incredibly well to create their works given the low page count restriction. From the next round, the page count restriction will be relaxed somewhat, allowing the creators to have a little more breathing space to tell their stories and further express their artistic talents. I’m very much looking forward to seeing what they come up with in the future. ”

Ryuji Tsugihara:
“I really enjoyed seeing the team work displayed by both the fishermen and the fish in this manga. The way in which it suddenly becomes very dramatic, coupled by the way it draws the reader in is very charming indeed.”
