SMA7 Closing words from the Chairman Shuichi “Mocchi” Mochida:
Shuichi “Mocchi” Mochida,
Coamix Inc. Board of Directors
Chairman, The SILENT MANGA AUDITION Committee.
Chief Editor, SMAC! The WEB/MANGA Magazine.
I start by expressing our most sincere gratitude to all those 608 entries from 64 countries, who bravely challenged this round of SILENT MANGA AUDITION®. “Taste” is not an easy subject to express via drawings only. We feared the theme may have been a little too limiting, but everyone who took part showed their strong intentions to express a unique message in a way that tickled our taste buds. Thank you for the delicious manga meals!
There is no GRAND PRIX award recipient this time, as we felt everyone is competing so closely, there is not one clear winner to award the top prize with – that means there are great many contestants, who are so close to winning the top award.
Same goes for those who just missed an award this time. So many contestants are just one step away from catching their first award. Please keep on trying, and you may find you are much closer than you think, to achieving your dream.
Common opinion along the judges, is that the levels of graphical excellence presented in SILENT MANGA AUDITION® is already at an astonishing level, that could match that of young Japanese creators debuting on Japanese magazines.
However we see many contestants struggling in finding great inspirations to express using that high art. Our editors will be contacting contestants who show strong potential, in the hope of there being a lot more GRAND PRIX winners to entertain us in the coming rounds.
SMA8 will be our 10th, commemorative round including the two extra-rounds.
It is for the brave manga creators who keep on challenging themselves, and taking part in our event, that gives us the strength to continue.
I offer my hearty congratulations to Hungary, Libya and Turkey, countries who had their first award winner. No doubt more countries will follow, as the world wakes up to the joys of not only reading, but also of creating manga.
We hope to see all of you again, and looking forward to welcoming new creators in the next round.

Nobuhiko Horie:
“BRAZIL is certainly coming on strong!!! This was my favorite piece of SMA7. Great job Eudetenis!”
Tsukasa Hojo:
“We do not recommend drawing long pieces, but I am amazed EUDETENIS managed to make this long piece work. This is top-level stuff in art, story, and being sympathizable. I am massively impressed. Keep on trying shorter works in future, to improve your skills.”
Tadashi Negishi:
“It doesn’t feel like a long story, because the creator utilized good dynamism, in showing important moments big and clear. Amazing construction skills.”

Co-Creator: Ikusa no Ko: Oda Nobunaga ( Coamix )
Co-Creator: Fist of the Blue Sky ( Coamix )
Co-Creator: Fist of the North Star ( Shueisha )
“Many SMA contestants demonstrated drawing abilities that are on a higher level than those of young Japanese creators. The world is really showing potential to create manga on par or even better than those from Japan.”
Tetsuo Hara:
“My judge’s award goes to DZI. Story is felt as a whole, that is felt through drawings only – that alone is a great achievement. However its the beauty of the finished pages that caught my attention. Without the speech balloons, each and every page not only makes good sense, but they all have aesthetics that would rival any non-story telling artwork. The beautiful contrast of black and white, and great “use of white” creates beautiful world that leaves strong impression. Well done DZI. Hope to see more from you.”
Tsukasa Hojo:
“Graphic wise, this is my favorite from SMA7. Creator Hagane presented it with rough-looking effects but his artistic excellence shines though the lines. This is art of great quality. Story feels it may need a little more explanations, but the atmosphere of the protagonist made me enjoy the piece so much. I hope to see Hagane continue to improve on story telling, and that is one sci-fi I want to read. Thank you Hagane Ishi, for this beautiful work.”
Ryuji Tsugihara:
“ ‘Forbidden Fruit’ entertains us so much, maybe because of the very simple message, ‘Stolen food is sweet’! It reminded of me the taste from my childhood days, stealing a cookie from the cookie jar while my mother was not watching. Judges of SMA believe the creator may have a brilliant ‘manga-mind’. that allows possibly turning every moment into an entertaining manga. Thank you NAO & Navinkin!”
Nobuhiko Horie:
“The overall story is very well put together, it shows the great ability of the creator to weave a very strong manga piece. Story loses the focus a little towards the end, if the story kept on progressing with strong focus on the boy and the dog, This piece would have received a higher award. Overall a very entertaining piece, Hope to read more from you, Spillman.”
Tadashi Negishi:
“This is a very simple story, excecuted very well as interection between the two characters. Showing clear mission for the characters is the basics of good manga creation, and Amatsu did it cheerfully well. The ending felt a little too sudden, if Amatsu worked a little more on the rhythm this may have received a higher award.”

“While showing excellent art, many entries felt like a struggle of creators working hard in solitude. Manga is best enjoyed when creators and readers form a community. I wish the manga editors of COAMIX to provide them the support they need.”

“We see many creators improving at each round. To outgrow your rivals, always remember to first seek great inspiration worth telling the world. That inspiration often comes, not from your pen and paper, but from good/bad life experiences.”

“The theme may have been a little difficult because it was very specific. ‘Taste’ is not an easy subject to represent with artwork only. However the award winners expressed their own story, exciting our taste buds. Well done everyone. See you in SMA8”
Tadashi Negishi on SMA7:
“Everyone is showing steady progress, but I didn’t find a clear-cut winner this round. That means everyone has a potential to grab the GRAND PRIX award. Contestants please use the materials provided by our manga editors, to cut it above the rest.”

Tsukasa Hojo:
“The old man protagonist left a strong impression on me. The piece holds strong atmosphere throughout the piece. If the readers are felt more in sympathy with the final aim of the protagonist, it may have left an even stronger impact. Another strong work from Zevania and Nattorin. Congratulations guys.”
Ryuji Tsugihara:
“I’m amazed the artist Zevania has many drawing styles. It to me feels like the artist is in the process of finding his own unified style. Looking forward to seeing him drawing more works!”
Nobuhiko Horie:
“That fruit seems to cure the thirst! Illustrating ‘Taste’ is never easy but Zevania did it brilliantly, expressing it via the action of characters. Well done!”
