SMA10 Closing words from the Chairman Shuichi “Mocchi” Mochida:

SMA7

Shuichi “Mocchi” Mochida,
Coamix Inc. Board of Directors
Chairman, The SILENT MANGA AUDITION® Committee.
Chief Editor, SMAC! The WEB/MANGA Magazine.

“As always, thank you all so much for your continued support for the SILENT MANGA AUDITION®. I would like to personally thank all of you, for the many applications we have received during this milestone tenth round. My warmest congratulations go out to all of the award winners. Those participants who were unlucky this time, please feel free to take a look at the winning entries and use them as a reference when creating your manga for future rounds.

For this round, we chose the traditional Shonen manga themes of “Effort”, “Friendship”, and “Victory”, and received as many as 379 entries from 55 countries and territories around the world. Though the number of entries was lower than usual due to SMA10 running alongside EX4, the overall quality of work we received was noticeably higher than previous rounds, something that both the SMAC! and Comic Zenon editorial teams, as well as the panel of judges were extremely pleased about.

The high level of artistic talent of the works was much discussed during the final round of judging, with the judges unanimously agreeing that the meticulous attention to detail was as superior as that of domestic Japanese newcomers. To that extent, a high level of storytelling, character design, and heartwarming direction pertaining to the themes was desired, hence the high level of judging across the board.

In addition, entrants who regularly enter the competition and continue to present consistently improving work, had their efforts thoroughly appraised as we look forward to enjoying their future potential. Each entry we receive is carefully read, so even if you weren’t fortunate enough to be selected as a winner this time, we’d be thrilled if you would give it another attempt for the next round.

Currently, the SMAC! and Comic Zenon editorial teams are working hard on a number of plans to give selected creators from the Masterclass and this current pool of winners, the opportunity to make a full manga debut here in Japan. With the help of both editorial teams, we will strive to create stories and characters that Japanese manga readers will love in order to give members of the SILENT MANGA AUDITION® community a full Japanese debut. I very much look forward to your continued support.”

Ryuji Tsugihara:

“Both the people and animals are drawn exceptionally well. The flow of the paneling is of a professional level too. Though a story told through the character’s expressions and movements without resorting to dialogue is what constitutes the Silent Manga Audition®, I felt the overall quality of his work was so good that, even without the writing at the end, readers can clearly understand the story.”

Tsukasa Hojo on SMA10:

SMA10

“There were many talented entries this time. I felt there was a lot of digitally created work in this round, with paper being used less frequently. Though the question remains whether to prioritize works created on paper, or those created digitally, I couldn’t help wondering if separating the two formats is necessary.”

“I really liked the mother’s smile. She’s a witch, and not particularly beautiful either, but in the final scene when she enters with a stern face, she reveals her kindly smile. Each reader has their preferences I’m sure, but personally I really liked that smile.”

BUS, STOP!” id=

Jun Tomizawa:

“For someone in his early-twenties, his artwork and ability to express emotion is excellent. With just a little more work on his storytelling, I’m sure the creator can aim even higher in the future.”

Nobuhiko Horie:

“The expressions and emotions displayed by the dog is very amusing. The various tricks the dog employs to get his owner’s attention was superb. I really feel the creator has a unique style not found among Japanese manga creators.”

My Best Friend” id=

Zenon Editorial Dept.:

“We feel the creator has a style that resonates with existing manga creators here in Japan. This manga could definitely hold its own within the pages of a Japanese magazine.”

Tetsuo Hara on SMA10:

SMA10

“I was impressed that despite creating their works without the aid of an editor, the entrants still produced something that reads like a professionally produced manga. Some of the creators exhibited exceptional drawing skills, of which several works could easily be made into a book. Their level of completion is really something.”

“The level of art was excellent. Though the Silent Manga Audition® is a competition centered around a clear set of themes, I felt there were many works this time that didn’t reflect that strongly enough. Though focusing on just one of the themes of “Effort”, “Friendship”, or “Victory” would have fit the round better, it seems that many of the works were simple silent manga stories. The round would be more successful if the themes were clearly depicted in the entries, especially knowing we received many interesting stories.”

“The individual styles and idiosyncrasies of each creator is precisely what makes manga so interesting to read. Though having high expectations for young creators is a given, I personally have a keen interest in what senior creators can bring to the table too. I mean, if there was ever a manga created by a 100 year old, I’m pretty sure we’d all like to read it, right?”

Nobuhiko Horie on SMA10:

“The overall level of quality has increased. Judging by art quality alone, there is plenty of talent here that I would love to debut immediately. I could tell that many of the creators poured their utmost efforts into their work, which couldn’t please me more. The ability to draw well is crucial, with the ability to draw something that readers want to see being of the highest importance. Seeing creators of such a calibre in this round was very pleasing indeed.”
