A message from SMA Chief Editor, Shuichi “Mocchi” Mochida

Board Member, COAMIX Inc.
CEO, Kumamoto COAMIX Inc.
Chief Editor, SILENT MANGA AUDITION® Committee

“We would like to express our gratitude for your continuous love of the SILENT MANGA AUDITION® and your participation in SMA18!
This round we received 440 entries from 73 countries, with the top number of entries from Brazil, and 2 countries, Nicaragua and Côte d’Ivoire, joining SMA for the first time!

With the theme of “Moments of HAPPINESS, AFFECTION, or TEARS,” we stayed true to the importance of depicting emotions in manga. We understand it may be challenging, but mastering how to show emotions is something that every manga creator should strive to master.
The top four entries were extraordinary in depicting emotions, so its creators will have the chance to enter the MasterClass and be considered for our most exclusive project so far; the Artists Village Aso 096k!

We can proudly say that after every round you manage to surprise us with the unknown depths of your potential and passion for manga, and were very pleased to see a Grand Prix awarded after a long time. At the same time, it was difficult deciding the awarded works, since so many talented artists joined this round; for the next round we hope to see you grow even more. We suggest you use the awarded works as a reference, or you can find manga-making advice in our newest video series “Minute Manga Tips!

In addition, we are also incredibly thankful to receive so many of your replies to our Feedback Survey. Your invaluable suggestions will help us do our best to improve the audition and offer you even more chances to debut in Japan. In fact, the top awarded entries will be displayed not only on our website, but also on COAMIX’s manga app “MangaHot.” Other exclusive opportunities can be found on the SMA19 round page.

Thank you all again for your continuous love and support. We wish you all the best in your preparations for the next round!”

COMMENTS FROM THE JUDGES

Tsukasa HOJO

“The art level was astonishingly good! I believe this is because the international creator community exchanges comments and feedback about each others works, which is why not just few entries have great visuals like in the last rounds, but the general quality of the entries is so high. We could feel your huge effort to have the pages as beautiful as possible, so thank you very much for your hard work. We cannot wait to judge the same amount of great entries in SMA19!”

Creator: City Hunter, etc.

Tetsuo HARA

“This time, the amount of emotions that the creators added inside each page was extremely powerful. I could feel how much passion and dedication each of the entrants dedicated to each single panel. I want to tell the entrants that didn’t receive the award they hoped for to not give up and to keep on trying until you reach the MasterClass, so that you can be professionally guided by us to create even more emotional works.”

Co-Creator: Fist of the North Star, etc.

Ryuji TSUGIHARA

“The art and personal style of the entrants have improved incredibly since the last few rounds. However, sometimes I had difficulties understanding the endings of certain entries. I think the creators are thinking too widely when creating manga for SMA: you only have up to 17 pages and no dialogues to tell your story. Please keep it simple and you will be receive higher awards next time!”

Creator: Yoroshiku Mecha-Doc, etc.

Jun TOMIZAWA

“SMA18 was a difficult round to judge because of the great amount of extremely good entries. On the other hand, another reason why it was difficult to judge was because some of the finalists had a very limited number of pages in their entries, even though the maximum number of pages is just 17. This prevented me to fully understand their potential, since their entries were short yet full of information. Please draw more pages with a simpler story in SMA19!”

Creator: Koroshi-ya Menkichi (Menkichi the Avenger), etc.

Nobuhiko HORIE

“The number of entries have decreased this time for numerous factors influenced by worldwide situations, but I must admit that this round is perhaps the one with the most high-quality entries. Not only creators’ art style, but also their paneling and storytelling have improved. I’m looking forward again for this standard of quality for entries from even more people next time: we want to you all to receive as many Grand Prix awards as possible!”

CEO, COAMIX Inc.
Author: Keiji’s Kabuki Adventure, etc.

Monthly Comic ZENON Editorial Dept.

“The quality of the drawing is incredible as always. We as an editorial department mostly care about the impression that the works leave on us, and if they make us feel like we want to read more from this creator. That being said, you don’t have to worry about your style or composition at this stage; it will be with our editorial support that you’ll be able to debut and work in Japan. For the moment focus on creating entries that can at least leave that “something” on the readers, and the rest will be done together with us!”

Publications: Record of Ragnarok, etc.

SMA Editorial Dept. Award

Comment from Enrico

“As always, great work! I especially liked the last page that stopped my eye when I read it for the first time! However, I had the impression you had some difficulties with the backgrounds and some of the grayscale looked a bit rushed for your standards. What if next time you re-imagine your favorite character in a very unusual situation and then transform it into something new for the readers? Please have fun creating manga! We want to read more fun entries from you!”

Comment from Enrico

“Interesting story and catchy designs; really well done in general! From your art style, I understand that you LOVE a certain Japanese mangaka (😉), but let’s try to come up with a more original style for your next entry. For the story, I had some difficulties understanding what was going on at the end of the manga, so I would suggest you to make an even simpler entry for SMA19. You don’t need to rely so much on the “message” of the manga, and I’m sure you can entertain your readers with way simpler entries!”

Comment from Enrico

“Can I be honest with you? I chose your manga because it was SO SILLY! …but I loved it and made me laugh so much, haha! Making your readers having a reaction and stimulating their emotions is the greatest achievement for any mangaka, so great job with that! For your SMA19 entry I’m expecting more focus on the story so that you can also stimulate different emotions in your readers besides laughter. I’m really looking forward to it!”

Comment from
Taninaka

“Your manga is wonderfully composed! I especially liked the scene where the main character is slowly getting tired due to his illness and the scene where you tell us that the main character is going to pass away, using only a photo. Also, the crying face of the main character with his face crumpled up is very good. If you can express the character’s emotions even better in the future, I think you will be able to receive a higher award! Keep up the good work!”

Comment from
Taninaka

“Your manga characters have very nice facial expressions! Especially the surprised face of the main character in the scene where his rescued friend is cut by the enemy with a sword, and the expression on his face as he cries in grief in front of his grave touched my heart. You can draw wonderful facial expressions, and I hope that next time you will show us a story rich in originality and panel layouts to display your character’s expressions!”

Comment from
Chase

“The core message of the story worked quite well with the theme! I think we can all relate with memories of the past and things eventually changing, which made this entry connect with the readers even more. I’m looking forward to your next entry, KanTan!”

Comment from
Chase

“Right from the first page we know the setting and what situation the protagonist is in! Your paneling and how you drew movement definitely left an impression on me as well. However, the story became a bit confusing around the middle, so I hope you can make a simpler one next time!”

Comment from
Chase

“I loved how you started your manga! You did a great job showing close shots of the character’s emotions, too. However, some pages had a lot of information and panels which made it difficult to read at times. My advice is to really think about what you want to show on each page in order to make your manga easier to read through the paneling!”

Comment from
Rose

“Your story is proof that the simplest way to convey your story is the easiest way to get a reaction out of the readers! I definitely felt that moment of affection on the last page. You have proven that you can draw characters’ emotions well, and now it is time to focus on studying manga techniques and the natural flow of the paneling more. I have no doubt that you will reach even higher once you master that!”

Comment from
Rose

“I was eagerly expecting to see your entry in this round, NASS! There’s no doubt that your characters melt people’s cold hearts with their cuteness and emotions. You know the ingredients of manga; now it is time to use them in the most efficient way and tell the story that will hook the reader from page one and will be understood in an easy and smooth way. You started well, but the end felt a bit rushed, so I hope that in the future you can spend a little more time in finalizing the story!”

Comment from
Rose

“I liked the focus of the story on the two characters and their journey! It definitely made me wonder who they are and what world they live in! Additionally, you introduced the world and your main character in a good and non-stressful way; well done! You definitely know that it is important to draw the emotions’ change large; now it’s time to practice more and surprise us with your next masterpiece!”
